New breakthrough in implantable medical devices: wireless module transmission
Time:2023-01-16

Technology of implanted wireless module

When it comes to "implanted medical devices", many people first think of pacemakers. Due to the lack of computer analysis or communication support, these devices can usually only work "stupidly". While most researchers are trying to develop flexible and realistic materials, Professor David Blaauw of the University of Michigan has moved in a different direction.

According to IEEE Spectrum, he hopes to improve the intelligence of these devices by equipping them with a miniaturized computing and communication system. This enables a new type of implanted wireless module technology that can transmit data from the body to the outside world.

Transmission of the wireless module

Implanted electronic devices often lack the ability to analyze and process body conditions, and do not include wireless communication hardware necessary to send results outside the body. However, the obstacle to this progress is not processing technology that can be easily reduced in size, but wireless radio modules.

Due to power and antenna considerations, they usually take up a lot of space. They solve this size problem by matching small broadcast antennas with external receiving antennas. In order to accommodate these short-term data, the team also developed a custom encoding method.

What's even better is that it does not require charging, and all electrical energy is controlled by photovoltaic cells (which are sensitive to infrared rays that can pass through the human body).

At the same time, it also considers the energy efficiency of the device, and uses a capacitor to provide the short-term energy required for transmitting data. This device is only 10mm³ in size, with a powerful wireless radio module built-in, and the signal can penetrate 3CM of body tissue and reach a range of up to 50 cm. It is hoped that this technology will be further reduced in size until it is suitable for injection implantation.

In addition, they are collaborating with a team from the University of Michigan Medical School to develop an injection device that can measure body temperature, pressure, pH, and provide image data.
